Natural ambergris is among the rarest ingredients in perfumery, making it a myth; it is a highly fragrant substance produced in the intestines of sperm whales as a bile secretion to protect intestinal mucosa from indigestible remains of mollusks. Ambergris is naturally expelled by the sperm whale and, floating in open sea, undergoes the oxidation process responsible for its characteristic scent.
